Building apps for rural Africa

This talk delves into the complexities of creating Android apps for rural settings, focusing on areas like those encountered by me in Tanzania.

Regions like these present distinct challenges for app developers, shaped by limited internet access and economic factors. Key considerations include supporting appropriate hardware, deciding on (Android) versions to support, and language choices.

Equally crucial is the cultural understanding of the user base. In Tanzania, for example, various tribes coexist closely, each with unique cultural norms and practices. Low literacy is higher than in other parts of the worlds. Limited healthcare results in more accessibility needs. Recognising and respecting these differences is vital in the app development process.
