Forget diversity for a minute, we all know our perceptions about what makes a great developer can stand in the way of diversity in the field. But what are the effects on the actual software being written? How do our perceptions about what software development is, and who the best developers are shape the software we are building?
Let's try to go through what kind of work we actually do in software development, and try to think about what kind of software we want and need, and from there see if we can learn something about what really matters.
