6 years of serverless – Lessons learned from real-world applications

The system that runs Grohe Sense and Guard was built 6 years ago on AWS almost exclusively using serverless technologies. This system grew during its lifetime to support many thousands of IoT devices and multiple hundreds of active users interacting with these devices in real-time.

A lot has changed in these years, many technologies were replaced by better ones, but the serverless-first approach remained.

In this talk, I share with you the experience and some of the lessons we learned from developing such a huge system on serverless technologies. I will give you an opinionated list of do's and don'ts to demonstrate some of the trade-offs of the serverless architecture and how to get the most out of it while working around its shortcomings.
